The third series was much better than the 2nd but as a personal opinion they should have left well alone after life on mars that was pure genius and they never captured 80"s britain like they did the 70"s, and sam was a much better character for Gene to bounce off, it really was the male bonding between them two that made the whole show so special!!
Life on Mars the orginal was very good. I have just received my boxed set of the series. If you get a chance to see the American version it to was well done. The guy who plays Ray is outstanding.

I started to watch the american one and wished id carried it on but i missed a couple of episodes and sort of gave up with it, also i struggled as a huge part of that show was nostalgic and not being american i couldnt get a handle on that and there IS only one Gene for me, i have life on mars on box sets and my all time fav episode is the one where they go to the nightclub and sam meets Marc Bolan and Gene is dancing to the Gene Genie classic!! Oh might have to get them out again for a viewing!!
I actually just watched that show on sunday and it is one my favorites as well. I agree with you about the american one but of course it makes sense it should and I of coarse remember all of it. I was 9 in 1973. My parants where big Roger Witakar fans who is mentioned in the espoisded. Yes you are right the orginal Gene is the best though the american one is not bad. I do like the american Annie better.

Roger whitiker yes i remember him i was 8 in 1973 , old durham town is one of his isnt it and he was a very good whistler They axed that american version after only one series didnt they? I liked the sam in that one too.
Yes they did only run one year but it was a good year. They did 18 shows. The Sam in american show is an Irish actor. In one show he goes under covered and plays a Irish immigrant dock worker loved his accident.
